Adventurous, imaginative, humorous, whimsically fantastical, and, in that way of stories told with a classic storytelling voice, vaguely timeless. Oliver is both a hero and an everyboy, a protagonist readers will both fantasize of being and relate to; they'll feel they could be Oliver, given the right circumstances. Of course, Oliver's circumstances are not commonplace: He's spent his first ten years strapped on the backs of and trekking alongside his explorer parents, always on the move in search of new unknown places to discover. Now the family is settling. Except, when they return home, they find new islands in their bay, islands they want to explore. They quickly discover, though, these are roaming islands that take them on a fantastic voyage across the sea involving mermaids, sea monkeys, sarcastic seaweed, and much more; including, of course, danger. Wonderfully illustrated and much fun.
