This was a first hand account of raising a deeply traumatized, neglected adopted child. These kids have a lot of difficulty bonding or attaching in a normal way even in a loving new family because of the unresolved and damaging nature of their earliest years. I found the author unsympathetic however and I was annoyed at the demands she placed on the girl, as well as her chronic impatience with her disorganized and dysfunctional behaviors. So what if she dressed herself backwards or left food on her face after eating? So what if she couldn't accomplish the most basic of tasks correctly like setting the table? The author takes the child's anger and defiance too personally and takes it out on the child. Obviously the child needed extra time and attention to developmental stages she missed! Clearly this family was under educated and ill equipped for the demands of raising a child with deep behavioral/attachment issues. The book is really about the education of the author by the young child.
