MAJOR NEW NETFLIX SERIES FEB 2018

This must-read story is a confident, action-and-violence packed thriller, and future classic noir SF novel from a multi-award-winning author.

Four hundred years from now mankind is strung out across a region of interstellar space inherited from an ancient civilization discovered on Mars. The colonies are linked together by the occasional sublight colony ship voyages and hyperspatial data-casting. Human consciousness is digitally freighted between the stars and downloaded into bodies as a matter of course.

But some things never change. So when ex-envoy, now-convict Takeshi Kovacs has his consciousness and skills downloaded into the body of a nicotine-addicted ex-thug and presented with a catch-22 offer, he really shouldn¿t be surprised. Contracted by a billionaire to discover who murdered his last body, Kovacs is drawn into a terrifying conspiracy that stretches across known space and to the very top of society.

For a first-time SF writer to be so surely in command of narrative and technology, so brilliant at world-building, so able to write such readable and enjoyable SF adventure, is simply extraordinary.

The concept that the body is a disposable commodity takes our consumerist society to a whole new level and poses questions about who we are and how we interact with our environment and our own selves. Are we really this superficial and exploitative?
It reads like a shallow detective novel, but has underlying questions which leave you up at night wondering about where we're heading as a species.

This book is more a murder mystery than good science fiction. There are better murder mysteries and science fiction books out there.

Although the author did a great job getting the "sensory" parts of this book down (mood, atmosphere, sensory perception), the plot was too scattered and un-focused for my liking. As such, I could only give it 2 stars. But since it was the author's first book, I'll likely try one of his later works as well.

I liked the book. It pushes past the reliogous nuts in this world that want to insult something they dont understand.

Interesting concept of swapping to various bodies - liked it and will try the next one now.

Despite the fact that Mr. Kovacs never met a female he didn't want to boink (and generally does)... plus the occasional feeling that this was a "hard-boiled" detective novel disguised as science fiction (I like SF... I don't like detective novels)... plus the movie script feel to the whole thing (no messy star contracts for the studio, the hero can be played by anyone!).... despite all that, I enjoyed this well enough to propel me into the next Takeshi Kovacs novel.
