I really love all of Joan Bauer's books, but this one was one of her best.

SummaryAdd a Summary
Hope is a girl with a life that you could say is unstable. Her mom left her at birth with the name Tulip, and the small girl struggled for survival. Once Hope makes it through her struggle, she goes to live with her aunt - a sort of travelling cook. They travel all over the U.S., and Hope never sees her old friends a second time. Hope and her Aunt, Addie, finally settle down in Wisconsin and work in Welcome Stairways, a diner run by G.T. Stoop. Hope works as a waitress and Addie as a cook. During their stay, Hope dates the cook (a waitress no-no), helps G.T. run for mayor, and pushes for the resignation of the town's no-good mayor. Now (spoiler alert): G.T. Stoop adopts Hope and marries Addie. G.T. eventually dies of leukemia (poor fella).
