One of the things I love about Beaton is that the people who die in her books deserve to die. In Death of a Poison Pen and in Death of a Village, people die who should not. Both books left me sad and the endings that usually give me hope and bring a smile just didn't work their magic either time.
Still both brilliant books, lots of laughs, lots of scenery and human interaction run amok. If you are not reading the series in order, don't judge the previous 15 books by these two.

Death of a Village --- by --- M. C. Beaton.
It is always a pleasure to read of the adventures of Constable Hamish Macbeth. The Scottish mists, the heather, the whiskey all contribute to painting a wonderful, soft setting for these stories. Highly recommended.
Good quick read. Still cannot picture Hamish with anyone but Priscilla.
The Currie sisters, Archie, the Brodies and Mrs. Wellington and of course Hamish are my favorites in this series.
