Narrated by the oldest daughter of 12 children, the story follows a series of family crisis over the years: from how the children overwhelmed their new school's administration office, to the time they threw a hospital into chaos when they arrived for a mass tonsillectomy. There's even a memorable encounter with a birth control advocate.

Clifton Webb might be forgotten now, but from "Cheaper by the Dozen" it just doesn't seem right. He had a way of looking at cast members like the kids here, and making you laugh. Myrna Loy is as always perfect as the mother of a large family. She is perfectly capable, but is her husband up to all that is required? Great Family Movie!

I loved the book.

What a wonderful movie! I used to think Clifton Webb’s best role was in Laura, but after watching this I changed my mind. My favorite scene is when the Planned Parenthood woman comes to their house and is horrified to find they had 12 children. (And this, I believe, is the reason why this movie was never remade: imagine daring to make any criticism, even mild, to Planned Parenthood nowadays?! Unconceivable!)
