"On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one... The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast. And then someone turns up dead. Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?"--

The author does a good job of building page-turning suspense using different first person narratives and switching back and forth between the present and the day before/day of the wedding until the two time frames converge. The reader doesn’t even know who’s been murdered until the end. Most of the characters, including a sociopath, are privileged, self-centred, and insensitive; it’s not pleasant being inside their brains, but their general nastiness is necessary to provide many suspects and potential victims. There are multiple, unlikely coincidences that are contrived to drive the plot and it’s all tied up a bit too neatly at the end, but overall this is an entertaining and well-written murder mystery.

I leaned towards 4 stars most of the way. Really twisty, multiple perspectives, and a couple of characters that I really liked. The ending felt a bit too neat, though, and too quick, with no real resolution for the characters. Still a great, page turning weekend read!

Not sure why this book has so much hype surrounding it. I found it to be predictable and a little off putting. The ending was a surprise I'll give you that much- however the best man deserved better. I feel like there could possibly be a sequel?

2020's breakout hit is ABSOLUTELY worth the hype. A wedding at an isolated Irish island brings together an ensemble cast where lies, secrets, and long-buried passions reemerge into a deadly conflict. You can guess who dunnit or just strap yourself in for a wonderful ride.

I couldn't put this down, and I loved that every time I had a guess, I was absolutely wrong. Dark, foreboding, and an all around great thriller that spooked me in the middle of summer.

Review excerpt: "It’s difficult to review a book that is so, so good, but you don’t want to reveal too much for fear of ruining it for others. 'The Guest List' is one of those books; it’s a thriller that is so superbly plotted that I’m afraid to say anything about it because I want other readers to enjoy every reveal as much as I did. I just want to shove it in people’s hands and say, “read this right now!” It’s feminist. It’s satisfying. It was genuinely shocking. 'The Guest List' has the atmosphere of a Gothic, but reads like a thriller. It’s fast-paced with lots of carefully timed reveals, and it’s told from multiple viewpoints."

I was hoping to like this book more than I did. It’s definitely for a targeted audience. Unfortunately I’m a generation ahead and the wrong gender for said target. Written in the same paradigm as her previous book The Hunting Party. However this storyline gets a little stale and drawn out in the last chapters imo. The ending (finally) did redeem the book. Good story but not great, so not a complete snore.

Definite ‘ Big Little Lies’ vibe - I loved this book!
The remote Irish setting , the ghosts , the wild sea , secrets , lies , infidelities , an ancient graveyard .... great setting , characters and plot ...
