Meh... Everything about this is just meh.
The lead, Ed Skrein, is creepy looking. The two females are standard cut-out characters. The dialog is minimal and uninteresting. Various Admirals (both American and Japanese) enter to say something that foreshadows the next scene. The action ranges from amazing to "that was obviously CGI." Some scenes, while relevant (like Dewey's Raid), are forced and immediately forgotten.
After two hours, I concluded that this movie was just plain missing "HEART" and then (roll credits) - DIRECTED BY ROLAND EMMERICH. Mystery solved. Of all his movies, the only one I felt was really creative and interesting was Stargate. I'm sure he's already planning his next blockbuster end-of-the-world disaster movie box office bust!
