Could not even finish it. Why do people love this so much? Also, her accent was terrible.

Thus DVD seems to have a problem.
It works for the first 30 minutes, then it freezes.
I tried to solve the problem, but eventually I gave up.
It really sucks!

it takes an hour and a half to get into the meat of the story, but when it does, it is entirely engrossing, though, throughout, Meryl Streep is nothing ever short of luminous, illuminating, a very Raphael painting, without which the movie would have flagged - once, however, the "Choice" is delivered, you're pretty well putty, you'll need loads of Kleenex, it's overwhelming

Sophie's Choice was too slow moving & not realistic. It was a fantasy portrayal of NYC life during the time period. I love Meryl Streep but she was not convincing as a foreign immigrant. The foreign acsent was not convincing. The movie dragged. It was much over rated. A time waster. Thankfully, later in her career, Streep got better parts. Sophie's Choice is a real groaner.

I don't recommend this movie. The story is weak. The movie is 150 minutes It took 5 minutes for them to present the main point of the story at the very end. It you watch it, you can skip right to end after you see the beginning. All the slow moving pointless drama in the middle will not have anything worth watching. It is okay for adults only. It is very sexual. There is some violence.

In my opinion - Out of this 1982 film's decidedly over-long 2-hour & 30-minute running time, only 30 of those minutes made Sophie's Choice worth watching.

These 30 minutes were the moments (told in very vivid flashbacks) when the guilt-ridden Sophie eventually recalls her experiences as a young, Polish woman, and mother, in war-torn Germany and what "choices" she was inevitably forced to make.

It took this film 85 minutes of pure drudgery before Sophie finally got around to telling her harrowing story about "choice".

To say that this movie was marred beyond belief by Kevin Kline's absolutely annoying, over-the-top portrayal of the Nathan Landau character would truly be an understatement. Kline was an ultimate ass in this picture. Needless to say, I hated him, like you wouldn't believe.

As well - Drab, dull actor Peter MacNicol was utterly forgettable as the Stingo character who befriends Sophie and learns of her deep, dark secret.

And, finally - I thought Meryl Streep speaking broken-English with a Polish accent was pretty disappointing. Half the time I couldn't understand what the hell she was saying.

All-in-all - I do not recommend this movie at all. It is far too over-rated, if you ask me.

Just saw this movie again after all these years...I didn't think the movie has held up very well....the movie plods along at a snails pace and gets quite boring at times....the acting seems over the top by Kline and Streep.....the acting/part by MacNichol is so layed back that at times his scenes should be on the editing floor....I believe if the movie was released in 2014, it would be a flop and no way Streep would win an Oscar....In general, I was very disappointed in the movie...

This film is still a gripping, sad film about the effects of WWll on people and the effects of mental illness on people.

I read the book first, as I sometimes do before I watch movies, or vice-versa, depending on what is available at the library. The book apparently won the Pulitzer Prize, one of the highest awards of literature. The book was full of self-indulgent crap and I got so tired of it I skipped entire chunks of it and found myself more or less in the same place in the story. What a crock for a Pulitzer Prize!

The best parts of the film, involve the flashback story of Sophie’s life during the Holocaust. Those scenes are very convincing and evocative. It’s unfortunate that Styron and Pakula didn’t focus simply on this story, rather than weave in a maudlin and clichéd coming of age story of a wannabe young southern writer coming to the big city to write his great opus along with the slapstick antics of a histrionic schizophrenic. The result is a sort of bloated crisscrossing tale that seems more Styron’s romanticized self- promotion as the Stingo persona than anything really tied to reality. I also got tired of hearing Streep’s English with a Polish accent which seemed just a tad overdone. Her job with German and Polish in the flashbacks was much more appealing and convincing. Ultimately, the movie seemed a mediocre and patronizing Hollywood version of the Holocaust.
