Add a CommentWilliam Dietrich grounds this globe-trotting series with real historic detail. An American expat is wrested from his dilettante life in post-revolutionary France and falls in with Napoleon Bonaparte on his mission of military and scientific conquest. Gage, resourceful but out of his depth, makes for an appealing hero as he finds himself on both sides of every conflict while reluctantly seeking mysterious ancient relics. Dietrich succeeds by keeping things believable, avoiding anachronistic dialogue and wildly implausible ancient technology. The series must be read in order.
Fabulous humor with a lot of history thrown in.
It was fairly good for the first part. History about the actual expedition was interesting, but when these authors start having action in ancient monuments like the pyramids, it becomes unbelievable. There are moving parts within these huge monuments that still work smoothly after thousands of year! GET REAL!!
Napoleon’s Pyramids --- William Dietrich --- William Dietrich is an author I have only recently discovered. More’s the pity. But on the other hand that means I’ve still a trove of his tales to devour. Dietrich writes historical fiction with panache. There’s excitement, suspense, mystery and deceit enough in this novel to keep the pages turning. Fast. As you might expect, gthe plot is set against the French invasion of Egypt of 1798. Dietrich’s perennial protagonist, Ethan Gage, fresh from the American frontier finds himself pursued for a bauble he has won at a game of chance. His pursuers follow him all the way to Egypt where they believe the pendant will lead them to wealth, power and glory. To complicate the story, add a mystical Egyptian priestess, a perfidious Bonaparte and death-dealing Bedouins. What a recipe. This novel is at least a nine out of ten.
Fast moving adventure with a little bit of history. Loads of fun!
This book definately had an Indiana Jones quality to it. It was fast paced and exciting but it lacked any real depth.I didn't find it overly interesting but it was fun
Worth finding more in this series.
