Great adaptation featuring Tom Cruise and Wilford Brimley.

Tom Cruise is at his cruisey-est in this fantasy/legal thriller. Expect plot twists that make no sense, big suits, scenes that could be cut, and running. Lots and lots of running. Holly Hunter and Gene Hackman are standouts, but otherwise feel free to fast forward.

"I'll do my best to protect you, and I know you'll do your best to protect the firm."
The first (And dare I say best?) of the many John Grisham adaptations of the 90s. It's definitely the best movie about a young lawyer you goes to work for a firm only to find out that the firm works for the mob. Tom Cruise plays Tom Cruise, the Harvard graduate who lands the job. This movie is pretty slow and long (2 1/2 hours) for a legal thriller, but does have a dynamite supporting cast that is almost Altman-esque: Gene Hackman, Jeanne Tripplehorn Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Gary Sinise, Wilford Brimley, and too many more to name. What is not so dynamite is how terrible Dave Grusin's "jazz" piano score is. They planned, but scrapped the sequel, tentatively called "Firmer" or "The Firm 2: Even Firmer."

Probably one of the best movies of the early 1990s. It still holds up today, even though technology has advanced so much since then that some of the plot points would have to be reworked if this movie was ever remade. The casting on this was just genius: Tom Cruise in his prime, Wilford Brimley playing against type, Gene Hackman in one of his best roles. It's a shame they don't make legal thrillers like this anymore. The other fun thing is the soundtrack, using just a piano to make all the sounds. I remember when the movie came out there were reports on this on Entertainment Tonight and other shows: the sounds were all made by playing the piano, banging on a piano's sides like a drum, etc. It's fun listening for those touches.

Interesting but I did not like the ending.

Not one of the better film adaptations of a John Grisham novel. It's an interesting movie nevertheless. A newly minted attorney played by Tom Cruise is recruited by a prestigious law firm in Memphis. As the story unfolds, there is evidence of major corruption, even murder, by some of the firm's partners. When a job offer sounds to good to be true, it probably isn't.
