At times I felt bogged down in this story which takes place after the Russian Revolution, but then it is a Russian novel with lots of angst. In fact, because of the length and detail of Marina’s life and connection with the Communists I understand MUCH more about the internal turmoils of the new government. The filth, the violence, the search for love and meaning in a cold, grey period of history is to be continued in another book. I’m not sure I’m ready for that one. I hope there is more hope in it.

I loved reading about the Russian Revolution from the perspective of those living through it. I enjoyed every aspect of this book...until the final part, which I had to skim through in order to finish the book. I feel like the thread of revolution from the people's perspective was fully lost, and so the book lost me too. I will read the second instalment, though!

Takes some time to ingest but well worth it. The characters, especially Marina, are worth caring about. Marina is young and privileged and decides to join the revolution. Quite literally she goes through hell. The author had me until part 5 and then the story became unbelievable and wacky. I only finished it because I wanted to see if she survived. It's a hard, harsh education in life for her. Will I read the next book? Probably.
