"Midwife Clara Perry is accustomed to comforting her pregnant patients, calming fathers-to-be as they anxiously await the birth of their children, and ensuring the babies she delivers come safely into the world. But when Clara's life takes a nosedive, she realizes she hasn't been tending to her own needs and does something drastic: she runs away and starts over again in a place where no one knows her or the mess she's left behind in West Virginia. Heading to Sea Gull Island--a tiny, remote Canadian island--Clara is ready for anything...She left her passport back home, and the only way she can enter Canada is by hitching a ride on a snowmobile and illegally crossing the border. Deciding to reinvent herself, Clara takes a new identity--Sara Livingston, a writer seeking solitude. But there's no avoiding the outside world. The residents are friendly, and draw "Sara" into their lives and confidences. She volunteers at the local medical clinic, using her midwifery skills, and forms a tentative relationship with a local police officer. But what will happen if she lets down her guard and reveals the real reason why she left her old life? One lesson soon becomes clear: no matter how far you run, you can never really hide from your past."--Page 4 of cover.

If you like Lifetime movies. This is for you. A stupid plot idiotic characters. Pointless story. Happy ending. Total trash.

Author Patricia Harman is a midwife by trade. Her first two novels (THE MIDWIFE OF HOPE RIVER (HOPE RIVER SERIES #1) and THE RELUCTANT MIDWIFE (HOPE RIVER #2) are a bit different from THE RUNAWAY MIDWIFE). The HOPE RIVER SERIES is set in the 1920's in the Appalachian Mountains, whereas the RUNAWAY MIDWIFE is set during the present day in West Virginia then relocates to an obscure island in Canada. I liked this book (like I did Harman's other two novels). It might be a bit predictable as you just know there is going to be a happy ending but it was a fast read and it did entertain me.

Not as midwife-y as her other stories, but a great story about her journey into a Canadian small town, an island, and a branching out on your own. She talks about shopping yard sales, crafting from beach glass, living by herself in a remote cottage, getting to know the locals including hippies with drum circles, communes, and organic gardening. She makes friends with some distinct characters that become like her family. A great retreat from reality for anyone that has ever imagined running away and starting over. There is mention of her midwiving, her own homebirth, midwifey things, nursing things, and at least one birth she attends. It did take a while to start, kind of slow in the beginning

I found the book trite and the plot unbelievable. I actually couldn't read it in it's entirety as it was boring and predictable
