Tom Rowhedge's new house at Merravay was finished on the last day of October 1577. Its story becomes that of the people who live or work there through the centuries - the young apprentice who helped his uncle to build it and the witch who laid out its rose-garden; an early Georgian governess and a Nabob; a pre- war heiress and a post-Second World War bread-winner in a long story of love and death, ghosts and legends.
