Lethal feuds between emperors and popes, the Inquisition, the Albigesian Crusade, the world as a labyrinth... and a manuscript, of course...
This complex yet entertaining part historical, part whodunit book is very different than any other mystery novel. Eco is a professor of semiotics, a medievalist and a person of vast erudition--all three things very evident in this book.
His master detective is a wise and tolerant Franciscan scholar, Brother William of Baskerville. William's young apprentice, Adson of Melk, plays the role of narrator and sidekick. The mystery revolves around the last remaining copy of Aristotle’s Second book of poetics, his writings about comedy, now lost.
