Ichigo Kurosaki was a little boy when his mother passed away. One rainy day, Ichigo, whose ability to see the undead is a blessing and a curse, tried to stop a young girl from drowning in a nearby river. His mother, Masaki, ran after them, frantically trying to rescue her only son. Then everything went black, and Ichigo awoke only to discover his mother dead and the little girl gone. It's the anniversary of Masaki's death, and the entire Kurosaki clan, along with former Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki, head to the cemetery to pay their respects. Sleeping demons rarely ever stay still and pretty soon Ichigo confronts the Grand Fisher, the Hollow that may be responsible for his mother's demise.

This volume focuses on Ichigo’s past. It talks about his mother and her unfortunate death. There are two key facts within Ichigo’s history told here. Firstly, this event changed his entire family’s attitude. Ichigo does not smile at all and always has a serious demeanor. His sisters are not as serious as he is but also never cry anymore. Secondly, the mysterious girl that Ichigo saw was part of the hollow that killed his mother. This leads into the battle of the episode where Ichigo fights the hollow whose name is Grand Fisher. The hollow almost kills Ichigo’s sisters. The book states that this battle is one for honour as this hollow killed Ichigo’s mother and almost killed his sister. Ichigo’s inexperience as soul reaper shows in this battle as he is very close to death at the end. However, Grand Fisher becomes to overconfident and gives Ichigo openings which let Ichigo win. Grand Fisher lives through the fight and escapes. He gets healed by another hollow and says he will come back for revenge. There is really no importance to this book except for giving Ichigo and his family a backstory that is quite predictable.

The plot thinkens in this volume. We find out how Ichigo's mother died as the young man confronts the powerful Hollow who was responsible. We also find out that Ichigo's sister can also see ghosts. Really rich story telling in this volume.
