Sixteen-year-old Albert Fraser, fighting in the First World War, is buried alive in a trench by a shell blast. After the war, he feels a need to fill the empty spaces left by the shrapnel that continues to burrow just beneath his skin. Wandering and working from Vancouver to the Yukon, during the post-war era and the Depression, he then travels to Spain when the Spanish Civil War starts, to reclaim all he has lost - or to die trying.
