An absolute delight of a madcap story for the young (and young-at-heart) by New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman, with equal parts pirates and piranhas, adventure and aliens, oddity and love.
"I bought the milk," said my father. "I walked out of the corner shop, and heard a noise like this: t h u m m t h u m m. I looked up and saw a huge silver disc hovering in the air above Marshall Road."
"Hullo," I said to myself. "That's not something you see every day. And then something odd happened."
Find out just how odd things get in this hilarious story of time travel and breakfast cereal, expertly told by Newbery Medalist and bestselling author Neil Gaiman.
Nothing at all in this book makes sense to me, but what if this life-changing journey is real? Try to wrap your head around a dinosaur whose expertise is Science, a hot air balloon, pirates, several wormholes, one mom's list of things not to do while she's away, two witty little kids, and one clever dad on his journey to get some milk. Gaiman pieces all those and many more in a lovely, enjoyable blend of fiction.
a dad goes out to buy his children some milk. on his way home meets a stegosaurus that takes him to a lot of places before he gets home. he then tells the story to his kids.
I said good-bye to all the dinosaurs. I thanked Professor Steg for saving my life. "Not at all," she said. "We were both fortunate that you had the milk with you. It is not every container of milk that saves the world, after all." "That was me that saved the world, " I said, "Not the milk." The space dinosaurs all had their picture taken holding the milk and smiling at the camera. "What are you going to do with the milk?" they asked me, "Are you going to put it in a museum?" "No, I am not," I told them. "I am going to give it to my children for their breakfast cereal. and possibly I will pour some in my tea." - See more at: http://jocolibrary.bibliocommons.com/item/show/1267245036_fortunately,_the_milk#sthash.C5hLd5oV.dpuf

Add a CommentA delight to read. For children and those who miss being children. After reading about the Father who escaped the Aliens who want ownership of the world, and Pirates who don't make you walk the plank, to traveling with a Stegosaurus who's invention the "Button" was named after his aunt, you'll be at your local bookstore hoping they have a copy of this amusing piece of storytelling. If you have kids, and they still let you read to them, this book will make you look cool to your kids.
"You are almost never cool to your children".
- Neil Gaiman
Well-written silliness--very fun read aloud.
A super-fast, silly, fun book to read aloud with your kids.
A good way to introduce chapter books to younger readers, this novel is funny and still has pictures to help you along with the story. There is the repetitiveness of early readers to keep kids interested and if a parent is reading aloud with their kid, a place for them to join in. We used this as our introductory book for our tween book club, it was well received.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for the young--and for older people who never lost their love of the silly and absurd. The audiobook, narrated by Gaiman himself, is sublime. Perfect pick for a one-hour family road trip.
Great little read! A father needs to go and get milk and is gone for a long time. The tale he tells his children to explain is absence is quite long winded and slightly a sci-fi. Even better as the children are having a hard time believing him. Fun read!
A brief children’s comic novel by the multi-award winning Gaiman. This is essentially a science fiction version of a tall tale. Children tell their father they are out of milk so he goes to the store. It’s a long time before he returns, and he spins them a long tale about how he met a time-traveling dinosaur inventor and saved the world. Clever and twisty, but slighter than most of Gaiman’s novels.
Very imaginative and inventive storytelling fun to read
Loved Loved Loved this book. In true Gaiman fashion it was fun and whimsical and magical. The illustrations are fantastic. This is a great book to read aloud with children! -- Jenny (See more of my picks by following WoodneathJenny)
Be prepared for a wild ride when you listen to this book. The kids need milk for their breakfast cereal and Dad is going to buy some from the corner store and bring it home, no matter what obstacles get in the way. Neil Gaiman is a great reader.
