"Bobby Blue is caught between loyalty to his only friend, Ben Tobin, and his boss, Daniel Collins, the new constable at Mount Hay. "Ben was not a big man but he was strong and quick as a snake. He had his own breed of pony that was just like him, stocky and reliable on their feet." Bobby understands the people and the ways of Mount Hay, while Collins studies the country as an archaeologist might, bringing his coastal values to the hinterland. Bobby says, "I do not think Daniel would have understood Ben in a million years." Increasingly bewildered and goaded to action by his wife, Constable Collins takes up his shotgun and his Webley pistol to deal with Ben. And when Bobby's love for Collins's willful young daughter Irie is exposed, it leads to tragic consequences for them all." -- Amazon.

In comparison with Alex Miller's previous literary output Coal Creek has a more pulpy feel, but this is by no means a bad thing. The book can best be described as a male melodrama that has the elegiac feel of a revisionist western. There is considerable restraint in the storytelling, the climax and coda are satisfying and there is also some evocative description of the harsh interior landscape as we have come to expect from Mr Miller. Coal Creek is not quite deserving of a classic status, as some Australian critics are suggesting, and to label this book as such will leave many with their expectations disappointed. Overall this is a quick and rewarding read if you're in the mood and will certainly connect with some readers more than others.

An extraordinary tale. I enjoyed this book in particular of Alex Miller's. Another one of his books that could be in any country. The story is so interesting and the ending as usual remains a mystery until you get there. He has you in suspense.
