So the "beast" is some sort of super machine gun and/or a serial killer who just happened to be hired by the bad guys to get rid of two people who actually saw the gun, and therefore might say something to someone. That whole thing, about…

The Inspector Gamache series is best read from the first book to the last. They do not stand alone very well because the author does not give a lot of backstory to the characters. Understanding the character motivations requires knowing…

Not my typical read but I did end up enjoying this book a lot. I found I couldn't put it down once I started. Good mystery and fun characters.

In typical Louise Penny fashion, The Nature of the Beast seems to be about multiple stories that somehow all converge to really be all about the same thing. I like that. In atypical Louise Penny fashion, The Nature of the Beast seems to…

Weapons of Mass Destruction come to the idyllic village of Three Pines, Québec in THE NATURE OF THE BEAST. Sounds absurd? Well, a quick read of the Author’s Note at the end confirms the story is based on real people and real events. And of…

Another entry in the Inspector Gamache series (#11), this story reads more like an action-adventure with a side of political intrigue than a mystery in many ways. The author excels at creating unique plots and this one is no exception. A…

Interesting that is was based on real event. Nicely layered with plots and subplots and supposedly random events all neatly tied together by the ending. You get more history of the Three Pines residents, ALONG with a very interesting…

To busy to write a long review, but I will say this, I love how this was inspired by a real thing and will just leave it there. These Three Pine mysteries are so complex, on one hand, the traditional cozy and on the other, an exciting…

JOANNE'S MYSTERY PICKS Every time I pick up a new Louise Penny novel, I feel like I’ve come home: home to familiar characters; home to Olivier’s bistro with apple and parsnip soup; home to the B&B with luscious, deep eiderdowns on the…

I thought the author had gone off the rails with this plot until I read in her notes that it was based on historical facts. Very interesting. The world is definitely stranger than any of us think.

Despite there being a factual basis for the supergun and the man associated with it, I found this plot to be a bit preposterous. I'm afraid Penny misfired on this one. It was too long and convoluted and although regular readers might enjoy…

Gamache's long-time concern with corruption within the Sãuretâe du Quâebec again comes to the fore in this novel, as a menacing conspiracy is slowly revealed.

What a disappointment. All the characters seem phoney. The Inspector has achieved sainthood and wizardry on par with Albus Dumbledore. I loved many of the author's other works.

Another winner from Penny! One of my favorite parts of her novels is the way every one of them has a basis in reality--inspires us readers to research them after we're done, or while we're reading. Of course, I also love the descriptions…

I've only read a couple of other novels in this series, but this one wasn't as believable. It's interesting to read in the afterward that it was based on a true story.

This is my second of the series (by accident) and I'm done for good. This author's obsession with the prep and presentation of chi chi trendy food (especially apples) is absurd and irrelevant. The continuity slips too often. The characters…

Based on a weak premise that a 30 year year old weapon would have any value to anyone. Still, I like the characters. Least favourite of this series.

Based on real events of international terrorism, arms dealers and Gerald Bulls' super gun, Penny takes us on and incredible and dark journey in a complex plot with many new characters and all the usual characters from Three Pines. Armand…
